The Skills for Trades team would like to thank our major sponsors for there support for the Chocol'art exhibition and the launch of the Skills Collider
Sponsors
The Skills Collider has been created to share and pass on trade skills and knowledge from industry leaders to the new generation of talent.
Through collaboration across multiple disciplines, this opportunity provides a platform for intergenerational learning via sponsored projects and competition.
The first sponsored project was the Callebaut Australia/Mayer Fine Foods chocolate art installation called Chocol'art
What is Skills Collider?
Skills Collider is a facet of Skills for Trades providing a facility and resources supported by industry to implement the below objectives:
-
Inspiration to young future industry talent by instilling a passion and appreciation for the trade and showcasing its many creative and career opportunities
-
Sharing of industry skills and knowledge through collaboration, across multiple disciplines, innovation and intergenerational learning via competition and sponsored projects, to pass skills and knowledge from industry leaders to the new generation of talent.
-
Recognition of baking and patisserie skills and trades and to elevate the public appreciation of the industry.
What is Skills for Trades?
Skills for Trades was conceived by a group of industry leaders passionate about training the next generation of bakers and pastry chefs that will lead the industry into the future.
Dean Gibson, Jon Pryer and Shane Williams have been collaborating on projects and supporting Australian international competition teams since 2014. Together they created the world’s first moving chocolate showpieces and not only created world records but also provided amazing opportunities for training and collaboration for young tradespeople to learn skills, beyond those available in the classroom or workplace.
After many discussions with industry leaders and business owners, a short documentary was created from the experience that identified a need for a mechanism by which industry stakeholders and government bodies are able to work together to enhance valued recognition and support for artisans.
Essentially, the industry must elevate their value and knowledge base and inspire young people to join the industry: by addressing the scarcity of recognition and incentives, and engage in knowledge sharing.
The key needs identified are to:-
-
Attract and inspire young people to pursue these trades
-
Address the lack of recognition and support for Tradespeople
-
Engage in competitions to encourage and recognise trade excellence and provide a mechanism for intergenerational learning and facilitate knowledge exchange with different countries.
-
Provide opportunities for tradespeople to develop and apply new skills to improve the industry.
To address these issues a collaborative team of industry leaders developed the concept of skills for trades.
